Safety & scam avoidance

Job scams are real. Walk to Work reduces risk, but you should still use common-sense safeguards when applying and interviewing.

Most important rules

  • Never pay to get a job. Legit employers won’t ask for application fees, “equipment” payments, gift cards, or crypto.
  • Don’t deposit checks or move money for an employer. “We’ll send a check, then you buy equipment” is a common scam pattern.
  • Protect sensitive info. Don’t share SSNs, bank details, or copies of IDs until you’ve confirmed the employer and you’re at the correct hiring stage.
  • Verify email domains. Real recruiters typically email from a company domain (not free webmail). Watch for look‑alike domains.

Red flags

  • “Too good to be true” pay for minimal experience.
  • Pressure to act immediately or keep things secret.
  • Interviews only via chat/text with no real company context.
  • Requests to communicate off-platform before you’ve validated the employer.
  • Requests for upfront payments, gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto.

Quick verification steps

  • Search the company website and confirm the role exists there (or on a trusted channel).
  • Confirm the recruiter email domain matches the company website domain.
  • Look up the company on LinkedIn and compare details (name, site, locations).
  • Ask for a video call if anything feels off.

What “Verified employer” means on Walk to Work

“Verified employer” indicates we’ve confirmed the employer controls a work‑email domain or completed a manual review, and we link job posts to that verified company account.

Verification reduces risk, but it doesn’t guarantee every interaction—always follow the rules above.

If you see something suspicious, use the Report this job link on the job page. We typically review reports within 24 hours.
